Historically, disciples of Jesus, wherever they went carried a specific “default” that meant that wherever they were they took personal responsibility for disciplemaking. Too few of us carry this “default.” In my book “The Genius in the Kingdom: How Discipleship Impacts Church Planting” I write:
“There are some defaults needed in a planter leader and their team. For example, in a new church, we all do evangelism, we are all disciplers, we all pray; and we are all disposed to do life with those who do not know Jesus. These are the critical defaults needed to have for a multiplication based movement and are the things to be constantly supporting and sustaining. If the culture around the new church is related to evangelism, discipleship etc and is couched in the right language and the right shared action, the usual dips in growth can be avoided. However, if, for example, too much is left on the planting leader in the elements that create multiplication, trouble will result and the first anyone will know is that the growth of new disciples will have plateaued or even dropped. This is a principle that has enormous influence.”
The best time to set this kind of “default” is when someone first comes to Christ and begins to follow Him!
